A charity has launched a campaign to bolster support for Blackburn to become a city.

One Voice Blackburn is supporting the #BackingBlackburn campaign launched by the council in a bid to land city status as part of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations next year.

The charity has asked their members and other residents to choose a famous landmark in the town and be photographed with the caption – ‘Blackburn, we live it, we breathe it, we love it’.

Landmarks such as King George’s Hall, Ewood Park, and Corporation Park all feature in the campaign which will be continued after the submission for the town’s bid in early December.

Lancashire Telegraph:

All the people who feature in the campaign live in Blackburn and are backing the town’s bid to become a city.

The Queen is due to confer city status on one or more towns next year to mark her 70 years on the throne.

Firdowsh Saiyed is one of the locals who is taking part in the photographic campaign.
She said: “Blackburn is one big community where everyone is accepted as an individual. Over the years it has developed and created opportunities for everyone. It deserves to become a city.”

Lancashire Telegraph:

One Voice Blackburn is a charity that aspires to create cohesive, aspirational and confident communities in Blackburn with Darwen.

Chief executive Zaffer Khan said: “As someone who was born in Blackburn and still lives in Blackburn I recognise the unique qualities of the place that I call home. Blackburn is big enough to become a city but it’s the aspirations of our residents that make it the right time to go for city status.

“The images of the people and the locations throughout the town really showcase Blackburn as 21st century city.”
