Traffic came to a standstill on the M65 earlier as heavy rain affected traffic.
It is thought standing water in the carriageways was causing issues for motorists, with emergency services and Highways needing to clear flooding close to Accrington.
A passenger travelling on the eastbound carriageway said: "It's just at a standstill heading west on the M65 towards Accrington.
"At about 1.30pm the traffic was backed up for ages.
"It looked as if someone was trying to unblock the drains due to heavy rain.
"It's absolutely horrible weather, really heavy rain."
No accidents have been reported on the M65, but motorists are advised to take care on the roads on Saturday as heavy rain is forecast throughout the day, although Sunday is expected to be a lot drier.
