A TWENTY-ONE-year-old man has been arrested in connection with an incident in Accrington, during which another man was attacked with a machete.

The man from Accrington has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and he remains in custody.

A man, in his 30s, was found close to Grants Bar with serious injuries after being attacked with a machete at a busy road junction.

He was taken to hospital, where he remains.

DS Alex Rawsthorn, of Lancashire Police, said: “This incident has left a man in hospital with extremely serious injuries and our enquiries are very much continuing.

“We are now treating it as a targeted attack and do not believe there is any wider threat to the public.

“Anybody with information who has not yet been in contact with police is asked to do so as soon as possible.”

Emergency services were called to the scene of the 'incident' outside the old police station in Accrington on Saturday.

A call came in at around 6.20am with police and ambulance deployed to Manchester Road, close to Grants Bar at the junction with Spring Gardens. 

It is believed a man was being treated by paramedics on the floor outside the old police station.

Police confirmed that the man was attacked with a machete in the early morning incident and was taken to hospital where he remains in a serious but stable condition.

Earlier on Saturday morning, passers-by commented on social media saying there were several police cars and ambulances in the area and the road close to the old police station had been blocked.

One passer-by said: "Accident outside the old [fire] station 6.30 this morning.Guy on the floor being treated by ambulance staff and the road outside the old [fire] station is closed off at the moment."
