An 11-year-old girl braved snow and ice to win yet another cycling competition.

Katie Lawson from Clayton-le-Dale, travelled with her parents to Gypsies Green in South Shields at the weekend to compete in the under 12s North of England Cyclocross Championships.

The Ribblesdale High School student dominated the race on what dad Tim described as a 'technically challenging course in difficult conditions'.

Mr Lawson said: "Katie was able to mix it with the top boys to be a convincing winner of the girls event having finished two laps ahead of the second place girl in the North West Cyclocross league event the previous day.

"She lost some confidence after slipping on black ice while she was riding to sign on, and she looked visibly shaken, but she was able to get things back together before the race started."

Katie has been competing in Cyclocross events since she was five years old and in 2018 rode her way to glory at the Great Harwood Showground when she took part in the North West Cyclocross Association series competition, aged just eight.

And in September she won the Wessex Series event, and was then presented with the North West Series Trophy after winning the Rossendale Marl Pits event on September 25, before heading to Broughton Hall in Yorkshire to win the series event the following day.

Mr Lawson added: "She likes to keep things stylish with colour co-ordinated nail varnish whilst mostly racing the boys."
