A woman has been taken to hospital after a tumble dryer set alight in a kitchen.

Firefighters from Bacup and Rawtenstall were called to a property on Rochdale Road in Bacup at around 3.25pm on Tuesday.

When they arrived they found a tumble dryer in the kitchen to be well alight, which had caused substantial and significant smoke damage to the rest of the three storey property.

Crews were at the scene for around an hour and a half tackling the fire, with two women tended to by paramedics, one of whom was taken to hospital.

A spokesperson for the fire service said: "The fire involved a tumble dryer in the kitchen and other items caught fire too, which caused quite significant damage on the ground floor.

"There was also lots of smoke damage to the ground floor and the remainder of the three storey building as well as water damage which was caused when fighting the fire.

"One lady was taken to hospital and another lady treated at the scene.

"We would like to issue a safety message in regards to tumble dryers - although the women were in the house at the time, noticed the fire and got out, we would advise never to use a dryer when out of the house or in bed at night."
