The refurbishment of a town's iconic Mirror Ball has now been completed, bringing it back to its dazzling best.
The artwork, on South Promenade in Blackpool, was created by artist Michael Trainor and is reputed to be the world’s biggest Mirror Ball being 6m in diameter.
The artist was inspired by and named the work after the 1969 Hollywood film ‘They Shoot Horses Don’t They’ which features a large Mirror Ball.
It was originally installed in 2002 as one of a series of commissioned artworks known as The Great Promenade Show.
Cllr Lynn Williams, Leader of Blackpool Council, said: “We are delighted to be able to return the Mirror Ball in all its sparkling glory back to the South Promenade for this much loved iconic landmark to give many more years of joy to local people and visitors.”
The refurbishment project has been managed by Blackpool Council's property services department and has been a team effort involving Garmendale Engineering, Jordans Glass, Mirror Finish NW, students from Blackpool and the Fylde College and volunteers.
The refurbishment has involved the structure being completely re-mirrored with 47,000 new mirror tiles and there has been an overhaul of the internal bearings to ensure it can rotate in full circle once a minute.
