UPDATE 5.30PM: All lanes have now reopened on the M61 northbound between junction six and junction eight following the earlier incident. 

One lane remains closed after a crash on the M61.

Just after 3pm on Tuesday, Highways and police shut the northbound carriageway of the M61 between junction six for Horwich and junction eight for Chorley after a vehicle overturned on the carriageway.

All lanes were closed for around an hour, with officers re-opening two lanes at around 4.30pm.

A statement on the AA roadwatch site said: "One lane closed and very slow traffic due to rolled over vehicle on M61 northbound from junction six A6027 De Havilland Way (Horwich) to junction eight A674 Millennium Way (Chorley).

"Lane one (of three) is closed.

"Traffic has been held for ten minutes."

At 4.30pm, Highways issued the following update:

M61 Update - We now have 2 lanes running on the Northbound M61 - we are working closing with @HighwaysNWEST to re-open the remaining lane
