A police officer and a 'brave' member of the public helped to disarm two men who were threatening a shop worker in Darwen.

Police said they were called at approximately 4.15pm yesterday (November 25) to a mobile phone shop on Duckworth Street.

It followed reports of two males carrying large knives threatening the shop assistant. A police officer was close by and attended the scene.

A Police spokesperson said: "The officer had a knife pulled on him and due to his quick reflexes and training was able to avoid injury and take control.

"The males were quickly apprehended and taken to Greenbank Police Station where they are currently being dealt with.

"We are appealing to the member of the public who bravely helped the officer get the situation under control. It could very easily have been a tragic event.

"If anybody knows who this person is please contact the police with details as we would personally like to thank him."
