Hyndburn Borough Council have issued a statement about Christmas light switch-on events this year after statements began to circulate that some have been cancelled.

Some social media posts specifically said the Great Harwood Light Switch-on had been postponed until 2022.

However, the council have now addressed the “incorrect statements” and say the switch-ons will be going ahead as planned.

In a statement, Hyndburn Borough Council said: “Incorrect statements on social media have been circulating that light switch-ons have been cancelled.

“We can confirm this is not the case and currently all switch-ons will be going ahead as planned by the various organisers, with the Accrington switch-on being this evening (4pm-8:30pm on the town square).

“Events throughout the Borough have been arranged by various organisers and Hyndburn Borough Council are supporting them in their plans.

“If anything does change over the coming weeks we will update on our website and social media channels ASAP.

“Hope you all have a fantastic time!”

Earlier this year, organisers of the Great Harwood Christmas lights switch-on (3 December) said they were planning to downsize the event – but not cancel it entirely.

In previous years, they had a big stage, choirs of children from local schools, drinks and refreshments and business with Christmas toys for the kids - but none of this will go ahead at the Great Harwood event this year.

Hyndburn Councillor, Noordad Aziz, said: “I think there’s been some confusion about the event.

“In previous year the event has always led with choirs from each of the primary school  singing. We have downsized this as previously said.

“The event will happen just it’s been curtailed for the safety of our young people.”
