A doggy day care centre and spa is set to officially open after nearly two years.

Dawn Wakerley, 38, is excited to welcome four legged friends into her new doggy day care business, Bark, Bath and Play in Accrington - 22 months after collecting the keys in January 2020.

When Dawn took on the unit, she knew a substantial amount of work would need to be done to turn it into a day car and spa but just as she was beginning to start the work, the pandemic hit, stopping her in her tracks.

She said: “We have had to jump through so many hoops to make sure it’s ready.

“But now I have dotted the I’s and crossed the T’s, I have finally got my licence and can open.”

Since collecting the keys, Dawn has struggled with renovating the unit due to loss of business in the dog spa when the lockdown meant she could only take on welfare cuts which she estimated to be around 5 per cent of her normal business.

Through lockdowns her husband Graham helped to get part of the unit ready to become a spa so that she could groom the dogs away from her home and family.

Graham continued to renovate the rest of the unit to be used for the doggy day care and after an inspection earlier in November 2021, she finally got the go ahead from the council to open the doors.

Dawn added: “It’s so amazing. I am so happy to finally be able to open, it’s been a long two years but it has been worth it.

“The unit looks great and although we are mostly indoor, we do have an outdoor area for the dogs as well.”

Some dogs have been welcomed to the centre on Stevenson Street West but the official open day event will take place on Sunday.

The mother-of-three started a dog walking business a decade ago after she went into hospital with an ectopic pregnancy and was unable to find anybody to care for her dogs.

While on maternity leave with her second child five years ago, Dawn decided to start a dog grooming business originally called Pawsteps before being renamed Pawspa.

Then in 2019, she decided while on maternity leave with her third child she decided to start the day care, before picking up the keys to the unit in January of 2020.

Dawn added: “I can’t have any more children or I will end up starting something else.

“My husband has been amazing building me this salon.”
