MORE than 25 people were caught making a U-turn and driving against the flow of traffic on the M65 last weekend (November 6).

Lancashire Police have described "unbelievable" scenes, as drivers who have made U-turns on the carriageway in order to avoid queues are branded "absolutely crazy".

A spokesperson for Lancashire Police said: "Last weekend there were two incidents on the westbound carriageway of the M65 at Blackburn which unfortunately resulted in motorists being held up in queues of traffic on the motorway.

"Unbelievably, some drivers have decided to do a U-turn in the carriageway and drive the wrong way down the entry slip road at Junction 6 directly into the path of motorists driving in the correct direction, entering the motorway.

"We understand that being delayed is very frustrating, however, we ask motorists to be patient.

"If a significant delay is anticipated both the police and Highways England would put actions in place to ensure vehicles were escorted off the motorway in a safe and organised manner.

"A total of 26 drivers were reported for this offence on Sunday (November 7) and Monday (November 8) at junction 6 of the M65."

PC Paul Travis, of Lancashire Police’s Tactical Operations, said: "Not only have these individuals put themselves at risk, but other drivers have been left in danger by their reckless and irresponsible actions.

"I cannot fathom why people would do such a thing and it shows a total and blatant disregard for the safety of other road users and the motorway regulations.

"All those people caught committing this offence were reported and will receive fixed penalties in due course, as well as being given strong words of advice.

"Remember - unless directed to do so by a police or traffic officer, you must not reverse, do a U-turn or drive the wrong way on the main carriageway, slip road or the hard shoulder of any motorway.

"If you are held in traffic on the motorway please remain in your vehicle and keep the hard shoulder clear.

"If you have missed your exit, or have taken the wrong route, carry on to the next exit."
