A FLIPPANT comment by a convicted sex offender prompted police to inquire further into his affairs.

Blackburn magistrates heard police discovered Soyab Mohmed Patel had a Halifax Bank account he had not declared as he was required to do under sex offender registration requirements.

Patel, 33, of Winston Road, Blackburn, pleaded guilty to failing to comply with registration requirements. He was sent on bail to Preston Crown Court to be sentenced on December 6.

Alex Mann, prosecuting, said Patel had been put on the register indefinitely in 2010 when he was sentenced to three and a half years in prison for attempted kidnap of two females and then trying to hit one with a car. She said this was his first breach of the order.

"He opened a bank account with the Halifax on October 23 last year and he failed to inform the police which he should have done within three days," said Mrs Mann.

She said when he went to the police station for his annual registration he denied having a bank account.

"He made a flippant comment about burying his money in the garden," said Mrs Mann.

"His attitude was such that it was reported to the offender managing unit and they made inquiries which revealed this account."

Richard Prew said the opening of the account had no impact in anyone else and there was nothing to suggest it had been used for nefarious purposes.

"The notification requirement is purely and simply so the police can be aware of his whereabouts and his activities," said Mr Prew.
