A new ‘cheating map’ reveals how many people are having affairs in towns across the UK – and there are hundreds of unfaithful partners in Lancashire.

The figures are based on Illicit Encounters', the UK’s leading affairs dating website, own extensive data on the numbers of people cheating.

The interactive Infidelity Index allows users to search a city, town or postcode to discover how many people are having affairs in any locality.

The figures from Illicit Encounters found that the Lancashire town with the highest number of 'cheaters' is Accrington.

1061 people were having an affair last year – the 34th highest figure (in proportion to population) in the UK.

Nelson also featured in the top 100 worst towns for affairs and 701 people are said to be having an affair here.

Blackburn was also featured and there were 928 people having an affair last year, according to the website's figures.

However, this figure is down one percent on the previous year.

The decline is being blamed on the Covid-crisis bringing couples closer together and making affairs less likely.

IllicitEncounters.com spokeswoman, Jessica Leoni, said: “We have seen a small fall in cheating over the last year in Blackburn.

"The Covid crisis has brought couples closer together and made it less likely they will stray.

"We expect the figures to rise again in the run-up to Christmas. Adulterers often use work as a way to cover up their affair.”

Here are the top 14 Lancashire towns with the most amount of people having affairs (in relation to population):

  1. Accrington: 1061 people (3.01 per cent of population)
