TV star and actress Julie Hesmondhalgh will be switching on the Christmas lights in Accrington this year.

Amazing Accrington, which promotes the town and runs events, is set to host the switch-on in the Town Centre on Thursday November 25.

A music stage, live acts, entertainment and fairground rides will be among the attractions.

Amazing Accrington is looking to get local primary schools involved.

Charities will also be offered to run a free stall outside Accrington Market Hall and are being urged to contact the Market Hall to book their space.

Chair of Amazing Accrington, Murray Dawson, said: “We are absolutely delighted to be awarded the Christmas switch-on in Accrington.

“The last 18 months have been a challenge for everyone and this is a chance for everyone to enjoy a spectacular night of fun and entertainment with the whole community.”

Sara Britcliffe, MP for Hyndburn, said: “Christmas is a time to come together and we haven’t been able to experience that in the last year, so get yourself down for the big Light Switch On, bring your children and let’s make it an event to remember for Accrington.”

Cllr Miles Parkinson, leader of Hyndburn Borough Council, said: “Come down on the 25th, enjoy what is going to be presented to you and it’s all about the community coming back together after 18 months of difficulty.”

The switch-on is sponsored by North Lancs Training Group (NLTG), Sundown Solutions and Studio Retail Ltd.
