The most popular baby names in England and Wales have been revealed by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

According to their figures, Oliver remained the most popular name for boys in England and Wales for the eighth year in a row in 2020, while Olivia topped the girls’ list for the fifth year in succession.

Data shows that Archie replaced Charlie in the top 10 names for boys, while Ivy and Rosie replaced Grace and Freya in the top 10 girls’ names.

Parents aged 35 and over continued to choose more traditional names, while younger parents opted for more modern and shortened names, the ONS said.

However, while these are the most popular names in England and Wales, do the names in East Lancashire follow the same trend?

We tracked down the most popular baby names in Blackburn with Darwen, Rossendale, Pendle, Ribble Valley, Burnley and Hyndburn - here is what we found:

Most popular boy’s names in East Lancashire

According to the ONS data, 3177 baby boys were born in East Lancashire in 2020 and only one percent of them were called Oliver.

The most common baby name in East Lancashire was Muhammed and a whopping 231 baby boys were given this name in 2020 making up seven per cent of all baby names.

The name Muhammed was most commonly given in Blackburn with Darwen (88), followed by Pendle (75).

Different variations and spellings of the name also proved popular with 77 children being named ‘Mohammed’ and 54 being called ‘Mohammad’.

Variations of these names proved to be most popular in every East Lancashire district apart from the Ribble Valley where Harry was most popular, and Rossendale where Oscar topped the list.

Harry also proved to be a popular name coming in at fourth overall on the list with 43 East Lancashire parents giving their children this name.

In fifth place was Noah and 39 parents in East Lancashire gave their baby boys this name in 2020.

 

Most popular baby girls names in East Lancashire

According to the data, the most popular girl’s name in East Lancashire is not Ivy, but Isabella and 36 babies were given this name in 2020.

This was closely followed by Amelia and 32 babies were given this name in 2020.

10 of these were from Blackburn with Darwen, eight were in Burnley and Hyndburn while three were in Rossendale.

Willow also proved to be a popular baby name (26) along with Maryam (22).

In Blackburn with Darwen, the most popular baby name is Maryam; in Burnley it was Amelia; in Hyndburn Isabella topped the charts; In Pendle it was Evie and in Ribble Valley the favourite was Isabella.
