AN MP appeared on Good Morning Britain (GMB) to call for “nicer politics” following the killing of Sir David Amess, who was stabbed to death on Friday.

Chorley MP Sir Lindsay Hoyle said there will be a review into the safety of MPs following the killing of David Ames – he has also called for the public to be kinder to MPs.

The Speaker of the House of Commons said: “What we’ve got to do is leave a legacy for Sir David. I think nicer politics [is needed] across the world.

“What we’ve got to have is more respect and tolerance for each other and what we’ve got to do is recognise that we may have little differences but we don’t have to use anger, we don’t have to use hate.”

Sir Lindsay also added that the media has a “role to play”, saying that outlets need to stop “demonising politicians.” He said: “Let’s work together for better politics that deliver for the people that elect us – we can work together on that.

“It’s been a very dark weekend. But let’s see something nice come out of the tragic death of our great friend."

GMB presenter, Richard Madeley, also said that serving MPs are seriously considering standing down at the next election as a result of the incident.

Blackburn Labour MP Kate Hollern has spoken out about the “hateful” online messages which she has received.   She said: “I send out my deepest sympathies to Sir David’s widow and family.  This is a heartbreaking tragedy and makes us all think about the importance of our security as Members of Parliament.  “I held advice surgeries last Friday.  Currently my surgeries are by appointment – although this is more to do with ensuring that there are no crowds and the surgeries are Covid-19 safe.

“Everyone, including MPs (and their staff) should feel safe at work.

“Like all MPs I have received hateful online messages – both via email and social media.

“No one in politics should have to endure what can be deeply offensive and troubling messages, or feel that their lives are at risk when they are doing what we all set out to do – help our constituents.  “But we must not be beaten by hatred and extremism.”

Sir David was stabbed and killed at Belfairs Methodist Church in Leigh-on-Sea. A 25-year-old man has been arrested.
