A community group is giving park users and sport enthusiasts an opportunity to shape the future of a town's skate park.

The Friends of Victory Skate Park are driving forward their proposal of improving the existing skate park in Victory Park, Barnoldswick, and with the backing of Barnoldswick Town Council, have just started working alongside Community Interest Company - Proffitts - Investing in Communities on the project.

The skate park is well-known and used, but is in need of renovation, with some sections vandalised and others in need of repair through heavy use.

The Friends group have already done some initial consultation with park users and there’s a lot of local interest, but with Proffitts now on board, they are looking for one final push to determine how the space will be updated.

Councillor Tom Whipp from the Friends of Victory Park group said: "The last 18 months have highlighted just how important outside spaces are to people and we want to make sure that the facilities within the park are as good as they can be.

"Wheeled sports are so popular now – it would be fantastic to upgrade Victory and offer something safe and fun for residents and visitors.’’

The final push on a consultation with local residents is due to take place over the next few months, and the project team are even giving wheeled-sport enthusiasts and park users the opportunity to get involved in the design process and influence how the space is updated.

Proffitts will be building on the consultation work already carried out by the Friends group, and will work with Barnoldswick Town Council and Pendle Borough Council in the forthcoming development phase with support also being sought from Lancashire County Council.

A spokesperson for Proffitts, which is committed to connecting local people with local investment and give them the opportunity to get involved in making their areas better, said: "We will also be asking local residents and skate park users to come up with a design suitable for all age ranges and ability levels of wheeled sports including BMX, inline skaters, scooters and skateboarders.

Proffits say project may take several years, but, as a first step, are asking people to pledge their support by completing a survey.

Director at Proffitts, Martin Proffitt, said: "This is such an exciting project and I’m certain that the team, with help from park users, will come up with a design suitable for all age ranges and ability levels.

"It’s quite an ambitious project, but with community support, we hope to attract the funding needed to implement this much-needed upgrade.’’

The project is only in the very early stages, but there is long-term ambition to make Victory Skate Park a must-see attraction.
