A man has been hospitalised and a teenager arrested following a serious assault.

Emergency services were called to King Street in Whalley at around 2.30am on Saturday after receiving reports that a man had been attacked outside the Co-op by a group of teens.

On arrival they found the man, who is thought to be in his 40s or 50s, with serious injuries and he was taken to hospital.

A teenager was arrested and as of Saturday afternoon remained in custody awaiting interview.

A spokesperson for the Ribble Valley police said: "There was a serious assault on an adult male outside the Co-op in Whalley at around 2.30am on Saturday, and a male juvenile has been arrested and is currently in custody.

"The victim was taken to hospital with serious injuries, the extent of which are unknown at the moment.

"Our enquiries are ongoing but anyone with any information is asked to contact the police straight away."

It is believed a cordon was put in place outside the Co-op, with police tape still in place early on Saturday morning.

As of 5pm on Saturday, a second teenager has been arrested in connection with the assault. 

Enquiries remain ongoing.
