WE’VE all been there. It’s 2am, you’ve had a few drinks and the one thing you absolutely must have before you head home for the night is a kebab.

It’s a classic post-night out meal for millions of Brits, and something some probably look forward to more than the night out itself.

However one of Blackburn’s newest restaurants is showcasing the much-loved favourite in a different light altogether.

Open less than six months and with hundreds of positive reviews online, German Doner Kebab (GDK) has become a go-to eatery for light lunches, mid-week take-aways and big family gatherings alike.

Work on the £500,000 restaurant started exactly a year ago and the very first customers were served in May.

Inside there is room for 101 diners, however given the fact we chose to eat from GDK on a Thursday lunchtime, it seemed much more practical to collect our meal to go.

Here at the Lancashire Telegraph we’re very fond of supporting local eateries. And by very fond I mean a select few of us are probably a little more familiar with some of the town’s take-away menus than we’d like to admit.

Our allocated take-away day is Thursday, when we spend much of the morning pondering over what to have for lunch before waiting for the clock to strike one so we can hit the streets and head out to collect our meal of choice.

It has become so much of a tradition we have decided to bring back our food review features. Every time we eat somewhere new, we’ll let you know exactly what we thought of the experience.

And what better way to reintroduce the feature than with one of Blackburn’s newest establishments?

On this occasion three of us decided to see what the German kebab house had to offer, each choosing something different so we could sample a wide-range of options on the menu.

First we went for the Doner Durum wrap, and it’s the perfect choice for people who are messy eaters.

The thin slices of melty beef doner come parcelled up in a wrap with salad and cabbage in an easy-to-eat package along with a trio of dipping sauces which are all delicious. A previous attempt to eat the traditional donner led to salad debris and sauce spillage everywhere although this was more down to user error than the restaurant!

The next choice was the Doner Quesadilla – a toasted waffle-like wrap filled with meat, veg and cheese with a second wrap flat-pressed on top.

And GDK may well offer the best Doner Quesadilla this side of Berlin. Cooked to perfection, succulent and deliciously palatable as a lunch-time chow-down. We'll be back.

To balance things up we also tried the veggie kebab, which offers pretty much the same experience as its traditional counterpart, bar, well, the meat.

The vegetables were fresh, the sauces really are stand out and the sesame toasted pitta is to die for. The veggie patty was well seasoned and tasty, though I’d love to see more meat-free alternatives on offer.

Unlike the wrap this was little messier to eat and I did find myself hiding behind the computer out-of-view from my colleagues as I scranned down my lunch.

Overall, GDK really does turn what we’re more used to seeing in a kebab shop in this country on its head, and while we were all in agreement that it’s probably also the better option for our arteries, waistlines and tastebuds, its right to say it will hit you in the pocket a little harder - though if you chose the right options you can get a good meal for a very reasonable price.

It’s fair to conclude that GDK may well have become one of our favourite new lunch spots in the town.
