A young mother who gave birth to her second child while studying has been awarded a first-class degree.

Finnuala Buckmaster, 24, was presented with the Outstanding Achievement Award as well as graduating with a first-class degree in BA (Hons) Business with Management.

Finnuala, from Haslingden, achieved her degree a despite having a young child and giving birth to her second child part way through the course.

The former St Mary’s high school pupil has now secured a position as business manager for Rossendale based HITT Fitness Company.

She said: “I’m so pleased to have managed to get my degree and can’t quite believe that I also won the Outstanding Achievement Award for the school of Business, Commercial and Technology. I’ve worked really hard so I’m delighted that it’s paid off.

“It was hard work because I was 20 weeks pregnant when I started the course, and my son was very young too. After giving birth I went straight back to online lessons, so it was a bit of a juggling act.

“I had my heart set on getting a degree but knew I’d need to fit it in with my other commitments. The course at Blackburn University Centre was ideal because it was part time and I could still work too.

“I loved the fact that Blackburn College is smaller and more personal than many universities and that they provided a lot of support.”

Finnuala’s mum Joanne Marsden praised her daughter for her achievements, she said: “It’s absolutely unreal what she’s achieved.

“She’s been so committed and never once asked for an extension despite working and looking after very young children whilst being in lockdown which meant I was unable to help her.

“All the tutors were really supportive, and I’m delighted they have recognised the hard work she has put in.”

Michael Skinner, Programme Leader for Business and Management said: “Finnuala has demonstrated exceptional achievement during her time on the programme.

“She not only achieved a first-class honour, but she achieved this whilst balancing life as a young mother, and all whilst competing with the demands of the pandemic. She will hopefully inspire many other students in similar situations.”

Finnuala was one of more than 600 students who turned out to celebrate their successes at the three Blackburn University Centre graduation ceremonies at King George’s Hall on Tuesday (October 12).
