NUMBER-crunching pupils are feeling on top of the world after finding global success.

The children from St Bede's RC High School, Blackburn, have been using the online resource EEDI – a free school mathematics competition.

It is open to all schools in the world and pupils aged nine to 14.

A league table is compiled every week based on pupil participation and St Bede’s has been top of the world for the last three weeks earning the school £200 per week to spend on maths resources and many pupils have won individual prizes.

Key Stage 3 Maths co-ordinator Stephanie Ashton said: "EEDI rewards effort, not always getting things right. Students build their streak score by reviewing topics and taking lessons.

"There are prizes each week for the pupil with the most 'flames' and for the school with the highest number too. The buzz around the school, with children talking about maths has been fantastic. Pupils are participating in their own time and enjoying maths."

Headteacher Daniel Milton said: “For St Bede’s to be top of a global maths challenge not only once but for a number of weeks is a magnificent achievement. It reflects the hard work of our pupils and the dedication of the staff. As a school community, we are extremely proud of their success.”
