A MAN attempted to 'make a break for it' after being arrested for drink driving.

Officers from Rossendale Police were patrolling the Bacup area yesterday (October 13) when they spotted a vehicle with 'evident damage'.

The male driver of the vehicle was subsequently stopped, breathalysed and found to be intoxicated. He was then arrested for drink driving.

The man then attempted to escape the officers on foot before being detained quickly with assistance from nearby officers.

He was remanded in custody and appeared before the courts where he was issued with a lengthy driving disqualification and served with various fines.

Rossendale Police said: "In the early hours of this morning (October 13), your Rossendale Rural Task Force were on patrol and spotted a vehicle in the Bacup area with evident damage.

"The male was stopped by officers and was found to be intoxicated by means of a roadside screening device and was promptly arrested for drink driving.

"At this point he has tried to make a break for it before being detained very shortly afterwards with some assistance from Immediate Response T3.

"The male was remanded in custody and has appeared before the courts this morning and has received a lengthy disqualification from driving and various fines.

"There is absolutely no excuse for drink driving and it is something that we will be targeting more proactively in the run up to the Christmas period.

"Stay safe and phone a taxi!"

The Volkswagen the man was driving has been seized.
