Enhanced stop and search powers have been put in place across a Lancashire town following a rise in anti-social behaviour and violent disorder involving weapons.

A Section 60 order is in place in Fleetwood within the area highlighted on the attached map.

It follows incidents throughout the Fleetwood area in recent weeks of anti-social behaviour and disorder involving weapons.

The granting of this authority is part of the police's continued efforts to tackle violent crime.

Granted by temporary chief inspector Mark Douglas, the Section 60 powers are in place from 11.43am today (Monday 27 September) for a period of 24 hours within the area bounded by Victoria Road West, Victoria Road East, Stanah Road, the River Wyre and the Irish Sea.

A spokesperson for the police said: "Sometimes ordinary stop and search powers aren't enough.

"Enhanced Section 60 powers allow us to stop and search people and vehicles without suspicion but are only put in place when we believe violent incidents will take place or weapons will be used.

"They are there to prevent crime and disorder and also to keep you safe and feeling safe.

"You should be re-assured to see a really visible policing presence in the area.

"However, if you have any concerns, please don't hesitate to speak to one of our officers.

"We are obliged to tell people about the powers – hence this post.

"We will post again on this page to let you know the results of the powers being in place and whether there is going to be any extension of them."
