Staff at an East Lancashire opticians managed to bag a selfie with one of TV's longest running soap stars last week.

William Roache, who plays Ken Barlow in Coronation Street, popped into Spex in Rawtenstall on Wednesday, and after purchasing two new pairs of readers from the store, posed for a quick pic with manager, Deborah Whittaker, and assistant Lesley Withey.

As of 2021, William Roache holds the Guinness World Record for the longest-serving actor in a television soap opera, having played Ken Barlow in the ITV show since 1960.

Ribble Valley councillor, Kevin Horkin, who is also managing director of the Bank Street store, said Mr Roache is a regular customer, and often comes in when he or Ken are in need of a new pair of specs.

He said: "He bought two new pairs of glasses - one for him and one for his character Ken.

"He's been a customer here with us for around a quarter of a century and comes over regularly, and was telling us last week that he's got a big storyline coming up.

"He didn't give much away about it apart from saying it will take place over Christmas and it's a very exciting storyline."

Catch William Roche as Ken Barlow on ITV, Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7.30pm.
