More details have emerged about the events which led to a pensioner being arrested for driving the wrong way along a motorway in Lancashire. 

On Saturday evening, a car was spotted travelling the wrong way on the M6 southbound from junction 34 to junction 33 close to Lancaster.

Police tried to intercept the vehicle at Lancaster South but it avoided tactical contact.

After travelling the wrong way for seven junctions, it was finally brought to a halt at junction 27 near Wigan after police deployed their stinger at junction 28.

The driver, a 78-year-old man from Truro was arrested.

A spokesperson for the police said: "On September 11, this vehicle was reported travelling the wrong way on the M6 from Jct 34.

"Patrols intercepted at Jct 33 but it avoided tactical contact.

"Stinger was deployed at Jct 28 and then Jct 27 finally bringing the car to a halt.

"A 78yr old male from Truro has been arrested.

"This was certainly all hands to the pump to get this vehicle stopped before it caused a serious collision.

"It was the combined team effort of T1 TacOps, T3 Tacops, Lancs ARV, Lancs Police Dog Unit, Highways NWEST, NW motorway police and Merseyside traffic police that finally led to the safe conclusion."

The man has since been bailed while police conduct some additional enquiries before they will be able to charge him.

In the meantime his driving licence has been revoked and his car seized.

Earlier this month, a 79-year-old woman died after driving the wrong way up a slip road on the M65.

Police were called just after noon on Thursday September 2 after a crash involving a Nissan Note and a Fiat 500.

The Nissan had travelled the wrong way up the slip road at junction three of the westbound M65.

After reaching the top of the slip road the driver attempted to turn left to join traffic travelling westbound towards Preston.

The car was then involved in a collision with the Fiat.

The driver of the Nissan was taken to hospital with serious injuries but died on Saturday September 4.

She has since been named as Anne Littlewood, aged 79 and from Bury.
