THERE are some streets in East Lancashire which clearly hold a special place among readers of Looking Back.
One of those is Penny Street in Blackburn. Whenever we print a picture from the archive of this particular street, it always prompts a great reader response.
We thought we'd delve into the files and have come up with a selection of photographs over the years.
These include two of the earliest photos e have of Blackburn taken in 1882 which show that a cobbled Penny Street was lined with a variety of shops and businesses.
As town centre retailing became more important, the influence of areas such as Penny Street would decline, although it would continue to house a number of specialist retailers.
Looking at Penny Street today you would be hard pressed to appreciate that it once had a series of popular pubs, a garage and even a cinema lining the route.
