LOOKING down on a building project that would change the skyline of Blackburn, this photo was taken in February 1964 and shows the foundations being laid for the town’s first blocks of flats.
You can make out the three bases for what become the Larkhill flats taking shape with pylons being driven into the ground and large concrete ‘rafts’ being created to support the three 14-storey blocks.
Each block would consist of 27 one-bedroom flats and 53 two-bedroom flats all with balconies.
From this photo it looks as though there is a lot to do but within a year, all the flats would be fully occupied.
