The last bank holiday of the summer is over and we will have to wait until Christmas for another one.

However, one union believes that there should be more bank holidays in the UK.

The Trades Union Congress (TUC) revealed that UK workers get the least amount of public holidays in Europe and said “something needs to change”.

A spokesperson said: “We get the fewest (bank holidays) in Europe - it's time we got four more with at least one between now and Christmas.”

According to their findings, the UK will only have eight bank holidays in 2021 which is 46 per cent fewer than Finland.

Even people in Scotland have more holidays and will have a total of nine by the end of 2021.

Northern Ireland will have 10 bank holidays in total by the end of the year.

Do Lancashire Telegraph readers think we need more bank holidays?

We asked our readers ‘Union leaders are calling for more bank holidays – do you think we should have more?’

The responses were varied with some opposed to the idea of extra days off.

Here is what our readers had to say:

Ryan James said: “I think bank holidays are good for the economy.

“Most people organise and do things. Can’t be a bad thing!”

However, Mr Simpson disagreed and said “too many bank holidays in my opinion”.

Another reader thinks we will “never” get extra bank holidays.

He explained: “It'll never happen.

“This Government will only allow extra bank holidays if it wants to for special occasions.”

A couple of readers said extra bank holidays wouldn’t mean anything to them as they don’t get them off work.

One person wrote: “I work them anyway.”

One reader joked that “one day off per week” would be better.

Ms Britton added: “I agree. As long as I get paid the same.”

When is the next bank holiday in England?

As previously mentioned, the next official bank holiday in England is at Christmas time.

Here are the specific dates:

27 September- Christmas Day substitute day

28 September – Boxing Day substitute day

Looking ahead to 2022, there are nine bank holidays to look forward too including the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee bank holiday.
