AN East Lancashire mosque is proposing to add a small extension to its buildings.

Asad Mirdad from the Masjid and Madrassa Islamia (MMI) in Great Harwood - also known as Segar Street Mosque - has applied to Hyndburn Council for planning permission for the single-storey addition to the place of worship.

The extension will create new ladies seating, prayer room and bereavement area.

It will lead of the mosque in Segar Street's main prayer hall.

In 1996 the mosque won an appeal against Hyndburn Council's refusal of planning permission for an previous two-storey extension.

This was to hold non-religious functions such as weddings or community events.

The proposed 199 square metre extension will be built on 320 square metres vacant land at the side of the main entrance and have its own ramped access and doors.

It will built of brick with a blue natural slate roof.

The extension will have UVPC double-glazed windows.
