A college tutor has launched a book scheme to help primary schools fill their libraries.

Nick Waldron launched his website, the Untidy Bookshelf, in June with a plan to sell books.

He buys the books from a wholesaler then sells them on with all profits going to help the community.

The Burnley College tutor was inspired to contact schools in the area to see if they wanted help building up their libraries after seeing how deprivation was affecting children in the area.

He said: “Reading and looking at different websites over lockdown about kids in Burnley being very deprived I just thought what could I do?

“I wanted to raise money and give books to schools.

“Every book we sell lets me invest a little bit more back into the local community.”

Nick recently contacted authors and managed to get 26 signed books which he raffled for £900.

The proceeds made from these will be shared between St Mary’s RC Primary School and Wellfield Methodist and Anglican Church School, both in Burnley, Great Harwood Primary School, in Great Harwood and St Oswald’s Roman Catholic Primary School in Accrington.

The schools will each get about £300 to spend on books from the company to fill up their libraries.

Nick is also planning on donating books to local free libraries on a regular basis.

He is also looking to source second hand books and organise a market stall to sell these where, again all proceeds will be put back into the community.

Nick concluded: “As long as I can cover my costs, everything will be given to fundraising in the community – especially school based.”
