We have found this fabulously atmospheric photo of Accrington town centre in our archives.
Sadly there is no information with the picture but there are a few clues which lead us to date this pretty confidently as around 1931.
On the left you can see Broadway with work beginning on the town’s famous sunken gardens. The town hall stands proudly in the middle of the picture with the market hall next to it.
The large hoarding you can see on the side of a building on the corner of Peel Street and Infant Street advertises Lanry which was a popular household bleach in the 1930s. And look at the smoke which has turned this daytime photo almost into night.
