THE DRIVER of a delivery van who drove into a canal has been rescued by firefighters.

At around 11.50am today (August 16), two fire engines attended a road traffic incident on Hollin Mill Street, near to the Nelson B&Q store.

The DPD van entered the canal adjacent to the road with the circumstances surrounding the incident as yet unexplained.

Firefighters extricated the casualty using an extension ladder and water rescue equipment.

The driver was placed in the care of paramedics and crews were in attendance for around 25 minutes.
