HYNDBURN Council is to appoint a dedicated economic development officer to help the borough and its businesses recover from the coronavirus pandemic.

The move is in response to a suggestion by borough MP Sara Britcliffe.

The Conservative backbencher wrote to the council's Labour leader Cllr Miles Parkinson in October on the issue.

Now he and senior officers of the authority have agreed to employ an economic development officer.

Welcoming the news Miss Britcliffe said: “Coronavirus has put a strain on everyone and has particularly effected businesses, jobs and livelihoods in Hyndburn.

“The government is working hard to stimulate economic investment across the country, and we need to be in position to capitalise.

“New opportunities are now on offer and it is vital that we create an environment in Hyndburn to support business prosperity, attract investment and develop the skills needed.

“The economic development officer can carry out several key functions including business engagement and support; building local networks and business communications; and identifying skill challenges and opportunities.

"The role could be responsible for developing local projects for business growth; bidding for local and national funding; setting up training schemes; and promoting the local economic area.

“Many other local councils already have an economic development officer and the role has been a positive addition.

“It is vital that Hyndburn Council now invests in the future and builds on our strengths such as our brilliant businesses, entrepreneurs and our community spirit.”

Cllr Parkinson said: "The council is in agreement. Senior officers of the council are working to that aim."
