There are very few businesses in the world, let alone in Lancashire, which can call on a collective experience going back over 200 years, but that’s the extraordinary story behind Stevenson Memorials.

The family can trace their stonemason heritage back to Scotland and 1795. The family moved to Lancashire to deploy their stonemason skills in building the Rochdale canal, before Thomas Stevenson established Stevenson Memorials in 1883.

It’s a fair indication of the quality and craft of Stevenson Memorials that the business continues to thrive to this day under the fifth generation of Stevensons, managing director Brent Stevenson, along with his sons James and Daniel, together with his nephew Greg and James’ brother-in-law Matt.

Today the company specialises in new memorials and also regularly adds names to existing memorials and complete many aspects of renovation work.

All the memorials are erected by qualified masons with a BRAMM certificate (British Register of Memorial Masons) to the current British Standard BS 8415. Brent, James and Matt recently were the first in the UK to qualify as Advanced Fixer Masons via an online course, introduced as a response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Our memorials come with a 30-year guarantee for the material, fixing and lettering. We provide a free design service, producing a scale draft drawing before any decisions are finalised,” said Brent.

“We cover the whole of Lancashire and a have a branch in Blackpool, but all the work is carried out at our Blackburn site.

“With an extension to our workshop being planned, we are looking to employ an extra mason as we continue to make more of the memorials locally, instead of buying in ready-made memorials. This will help reduce our carbon footprint, allow for more personalisation and reduce the price for our customers."
