A man has been fined 100 times the price of a train ticket after attempting to avoiding a £2.20 fare.

Christopher Myatt, 33, got on a train at Layton on November 6, 2020, to travel to Blackpool North.

He had not bought a ticket or obtained a promise to pay notice at Layton despite there being tickets facilities at the station.

Myatt, of Manxman Road, Blackburn, was given a penalty fare notice upon arrival to Blackpool North station which demanded he paid £20 within 21 days.

Payment or an appeal must be made within 21 days, however after no payment was made, a reminder letter was sent.

Again, no payment was made and a final reminder letter was sent.

Myatt, who was absent from the hearing, was found guilty of failure to produce or deliver rail ticket on request in Preston Magistrates Courts and was fined £220, was ordered to pay £2.20 compensation, victim surcharge of £34 and court costs of £150 – a total payment of £406.20 ordered.
