A Lancashire borough has benefited from more than £6million of direct investment which has helped to redevelop a town centre. 

In their annual report, West Lanacshire Borough Council revealed they also received additional support from the Lancashire Enterprise Partnership (LEP) in the last financial year, which provided higher and further education providers as well as major developments with a much needed cash boost.

This investment and support includes:

• £3million invested in the Edge Hill University Technology Hub

• £2million invested in the redevelopment of Skelmersdale town centre

• £1million invested in the new STEM Technology Centre at West Lancashire College

• Loan funding towards Ormskirk Court Hotel

LEP via BOOST, Lancashire's Growth Hub (delivered by Lancashire County Council) has also supported a number of businesses in West Lancashire with 'Boost Your Recovery' and 'Kick Start Tourism' grants.

Leader of West Lancashire Borough Council, Councillor Ian Moran, said: "It's great to see the LEP investing in jobs, businesses and development opportunities, as well as in education and skills in West Lancashire to give our economy a boost after the tough year we've had.

"It sets a solid foundation to build upon as we bounce back from the pandemic, to attract more investment and economic growth into the borough."

The Lancashire Enterprise Partnership (LEP) is a strategic collaboration between business, universities and local councils which directs economic growth and drives job creation.

The LEP was formed in 2011 to make Lancashire the location for business growth and inward investment.

Since then, they have played a crucial role in coordinating the county’s economic priorities.

The LEP’s long-term strategic economic framework will also help to inform the 'Independent Economic Review' and 'Environment Commission' of the Greater Lancashire Plan (GLP), an initiative being led by Lancashire’s local government leaders including WLBC.

The LEP's annual report also demonstrates that many Lancashire businesses have been incredibly resilient and innovative during the pandemic, and that Lancashire’s entrepreneurial spirit has spurred on many individuals to start their own enterprises and that local businesses and the support available to them is already stimulating new economic growth.
