A 28-year-old was arrested after a 30-year-old man received head injuries during a late night attack.

On Friday, police were called to Devonport Court in Blackburn after receiving reports of an assault.

When officers arrived at around 10.40pm, they found a man in his 30s with a head injury.

A 28-year-old man from Darwen was arrested on suspicion of section 18 assault and has since been released on bail.

A spokesperson for the police said: "We were called to reports of an assault in Devonport Court, Blackburn, at 10.41pm on July 9.

"A man in his 30s was found with a head injury.

"A 28-year-old man from Darwen was arrested on suspicion of Section 18 Assault. He has since been released on bail pending further enquiries."

Devonport Court is a sheltered housing scheme for the elderly on Belle View Street in Blackburn.

One resident, who did not wish to be named said: "It is unfair that we have to put up with this sort of intrusion. There's a lot of elderly folk living here and it makes us feel unsafe."

In September 2020, residents in Devonport Court said they no longer felt comfortable in their homes after younger people they say have drink and drug issues moved into their accommodation block.

It is believed the situation has been ongoing for the best part of two years now, with a handful of the 41 properties now being occupied by younger people.

In February 2020, a 39-year-old man took his own life in the bathroom of a property within the housing scheme after a night of drinking and drug taking.

At the time a spokesperson for Places for People, who manage Devonport Court, said: “Our customers’ safety and welfare always comes first and we take reports of this nature very seriously.

“We are working with customers and will do everything we can to resolve any concerns reported to us.”
