They may be named ‘German Doner Kebab’ but they are firmly behind England ahead of the big game.

Staff at Blackburn’s new 101-seater German Doner Kebab (GDK) Restaurant on Eanam were hoping England can progress to the quarters in the heavyweight clash at Wembley.

England have not beaten Germany in a knockout game in a major championship since 1966 and were twice dumped out on penalties in the nineties.

The last time the side met in a major tournament at the World Cup in 2010 Germany won 4-1.

A spokesperson for the Blackburn store said: “We are all looking forward to the big game and we are hoping that the players can do the country proud.

“We may be called German Doner Kebab but we are rooting for England all the way.

“Let’s hope we can make it to the quarters and then all way to the final.”

The new Blackburn restaurant was the brand’s 56th site in the UK when it opened in April.

The GDK restaurant takes up most of the ground floor area of the building and includes a prayer room.

Another restaurant based next door to the GDK is also being planned but details for this are yet to be revealed.

The GDK brand originated in Germany and opened its first restaurant in Berlin in 1989. This year announced plans to almost double its network of stores to nearly 100 sites, with the expansion plans set to create 1,800 jobs.

The brand will also expand into Manchester, Newcastle, Huddersfield, Stockport, Stirling, and additional sites in London and Glasgow by the end of 2021.
