A MAN will appear in court today following a collision which left a child in hospital with serious injuries.

Police were called at 6.35pm on Thursday (June 24) to Newchurch Road, Bacup to reports of a serious incident in which a grey BMW had struck an eight-year-old boy on a toy scooter, with the driver of the car failing to stop at the scene.

Anthony McKenna, 34, of Newchurch Road, Bacup was arrested over the weekend and is due to appear at Blackburn Magistrates' Court this morning (June 28), charged with a number of offences including; driving without due care and attention, driving without third party insurance, causing serious injury by driving while disqualified and failing to stop after a road accident.

Mr McKenna was also charged with failing to report the incident and aggravated vehicle taking.

Liam Daley, eight, also from Bacup, was airlifted to Manchester Children's Hospital with serious head injuries, where he remains in a 'poorly' condition.

Rossendale United Football Club, where Liam plays in their under eight blue team, has launched a fundraiser to support the family which has already raised over £1,000.

Police are asking anyone with information about the incident to call 101, quoting log 1257 of June 24, 2021.
