Over 10 bags of litter have been picked up as part of the Great British Spring Clean.

Tinker Brook in Oswaldtwistle has been cleaned by the volunteers from the Ribble Rivers Trust who collected the bags of litter and other debris during the annual event.

In three hours they collected 11 bags of rubbish, two bicycles, a gaming chair, two babies jumperoos, a foot stool and a trolley.

Head of learning and engagement for the trust, Harvey Hamilton-Thorpe said: "People are well aware of the problems of pollution in our oceans but most of the rubbish comes down from the rivers so the Trust is very active in trying to clean the Ribble’s rivers and prevent the rubbish reaching the oceans.

“During the pandemic, people have been out and about a lot more, enjoying their local environment so it’s important that we keep rivers clean and healthy for people and wildlife.”

Oswaldtwistle Rotary Club and the Friends of Accrington Lodges helped Ribble River Trust to clean up Tinker Brook which is the main watercourse passing through the town.

Volunteer supervisor, Robert Cooper said: “I would like to thank Oswaldtwistle Rotary Club for contacting me with their concerns about the amount of litter in Tinker Brook.

"We had a successful day removing a lot of large items from the brook and it’s fantastic to know that clubs like the local Rotary keep on top of clearing the brook from litter and making it a much more enjoyable place for all to share."
