Great Harwood residents have been sharing their memories of a local ice cream hut which was demolished earlier this week.

The wooden structure, which was located in Lowerfold Park, had to be destroyed as the structure was “beyond repair”.

A spokesperson for Hyndburn Borough Council said: “ The old wooden building in Lowerfold Park, which had most recently been used as a bowls pavilion, was demolished because the condition of the structure was beyond economical repair.

“The brick building in the park is now being used as a bowls pavilion so the bowlers are still able to use the park for crown green bowling.”

However, the demolition was a blow to some local residents who shared childhood memories of the hut on Harwood Is Our Home Town community page on Facebook.

Sarah Tyldesley said: “I am sad to see it go- I have a lot of childhood memories of it.

“I used to visit it every day in the summer and buy an apple cider ice lolly and sit on the bench outside and watch them play bowls. Those ice lollies were the best!”

One group member shared a fond family memory of the ice cream hut and wrote: “My granddad Jimmy Singleton sold ice cream there in the late 60s early 70s”

Another person wrote: “I used love going there for ice lollies as a kid.”

“There goes my childhood,” wrote another. “Sitting on a bench with a square ice cream watching the bowling with my gran and Aunty Winnie.”

Another member of the group wrote: “Loved that place as a little girl and as a Youth worker taking groups of girls there.”

“So sad to see this go after all these years,” wrote another. “My late husband was a member of Lowerfold Bowling Club and we could always get cups of tea snacks etc. during the bowling season.

“But it has been neglected and fallen into disrepair for many years now!”

However, not everyone on the post was quite as sentimental.

One person said: “It needed to be done- it was grotty”

“Have to say it was getting a mess,” said another.

Another described it as a “danger” of a building but added that “they hope it will be replaced with something else.”

“R.I.P rotten shed,” said another.
