Police are investigating after vandals dislodged large stones causing thousands of pounds of damage.

Vandals were said to be responsible for the damage with stones thrown into a chamber containing a valve and pumping stations at Barrowford Reservoir.

Rossendale Police said this evening (June 16): “Today we attended Barrowford Reservoir due to reports of criminal damage to the retaining wall whereby stones have been dislodged.

“Some have been thrown into the reservoir and others dropped into the chamber containing a valve and pumping system, this mindless act has caused damage which runs into tens of thousands of pounds.

“Damage has also been caused to the water safety signs shown in the pictures.

“At this time we are unsure as to who has caused this damage, however, we ask that if you have children you are aware of their whereabouts and what they are getting up to, also if you are a walker and you spot any suspicious activity in the area, please make sure to contact the Police on 101 or 999 depending on the level of risk.

“We will be increasing our uniformed and plain clothes patrols in the area. Please also be aware of the dangers of open water.”
