AN East Lancashire local authority has revealed it £2.9million programme of road maintenance schemes.

They were approved by this month's meeting of the Blackburn with Darwen Council's Executive Board.

Carriageway maintenance will take place in the coming 12 months on Whalley New Road, Duke Street , Yew Tree Drive and Tockholes Road in the borough; at the Emerald Avenue junction with Brownhill Drive in Blackburn; on Bolton Road in Darwen from Green Arms Road north to Moss Gap Cottages; and in Jubilee Square and Barton Street in Blackburn.

New resilient road surfaces will be created on New Chapel Street in Blackburn and on Belmont Road from Belmont north to the borough's boundary with Lancashire County Council.

Money from the government's Pothole Fund will be spent on tackling defects at various locations across the borough especially on Cranberry Lane in Darwen and on Roman Road in Blackburn.

Major drainage works are scheduled for Pleckgate Road, Preston Old Road and Cherry Tree Lane, all in Blackburn.

Traffic light and traffic management signal upgrades are planned for the Little Harwood crossing; the junction of Haslingden Road and Old Bank Lane; the King Street and Montague Street Junction; the Haslingden Road corridor and the Haslingden Road and Guide island; Preston New Road and Yew Tree Drive, all in Blackburn.

The approved schemes also include major maintenance to highway structures including to Rakes Bridge Culvert, Kings canal bridge and Blackburn's Clinton Street Bridge from Moss Street to Stanley Street.

There will be parapet repairs to St Ives bridge and the old man culvert and signage improvements to the bridge at Entwistle station.

Included in the programme are strengthening works to Blackburn's Cob Wall retaining wall and parapet and the repainting and refurbishment of the town centres's Wainwright Bridge over the railway.

There will be assessment's of the state of the borough's Aqueduct Road Footbridge, Charnley Street Footbridge and High Street Subway.

The programme for 2021/22 also includes maintenance to traffic barriers at Billinge End and Wellington Mews in Blackburn and drainage works to Roman Road.

There is cash set aside for street lighting column repairs across the borough.

Other capital works to be paid from from housing developers Section 106 payments include speed reduction measures, markings and lining, signage, and toucan pedestrian crossings on Yew Tree Drive Blackburn and a pedestrian crossing and slow down markings on the Guide's School Lane.
