Being a fully paid up member of the Catholic Church I was intrigued by Boris Johnson’s recent marriage to Carrie Symonds (a practising Catholic) in that bastion of English Roman Catholicism, the iconic Westminster Cathedral.

Johnson was baptised a Catholic but in his teens was confirmed in the Anglican religion.

Now if you are a Catholic and are married in the Catholic church and later get divorced you cannot marry again in the Church.

So how come our Prime Minister was afforded a Catholic marriage ceremony since he has been married twice before and subsequently divorced both times?

Well it seems that if you are baptised a Catholic, you’re always a Catholic in the eyes of the Vatican and the Church does not recognise any marriage ceremonies you have gone through in any other religion!

So they consider his first two ‘marriages’ to be ‘null and void’. Interesting... there always seems to be loopholes for the rich and powerful.
