The most popular choices included Old Mill Hill, with dozens of comments declaring it the best they had ever been to.

Situated on New Chapel Street, it seems Blackburn loves the old school chippy, especially the John Bull speciality.

Vinny Thomas even said: “Old Mill Hill Chippy....a lightly battered Tyson Fury would be proud of.”

Holly Tree Chippy

Holly Tree Chippy in Pinewood was another popular choice, looking every bit the traditional fish & chip shop, you could imagine.

But it could also be their friendly service giving this place a top spot.

Susan Swain said: “Holly Tree Chippy!! Deliveries throughout lockdown, friendly faces and happy voices when placing orders.... Brilliant all round!”

The Wellington

The Wellington was another favourite, on Wellington Road.

Tracey Handley said: “The Wellington...they do the best John Bull.

Owner Peter Zarac said: “We are really pleased people thought we were one of the best.

“I’ve been doing this for 34 years now and we have a lot of loyal following here.

“People come from all over Blackburn, especially for our John Bulls.”

John Bull is a special Blackburn dish consisting of mince and onions between two potato slices then battered and deep fried.

It can only be found in Blackburn usually and is still served in a select few traditional fish and chip shops.

Mr Zarac said: “We are a traditional fish & chip shop and don’t do things like kebabs or burgers.”

The Ocean Chippy

The Ocean Chippy in Whalley Banks is another favourite.

Although the takeaway does not seem to allow pre-ordering with a phone number, they were still named as one of the best.

Bryan Street had numerous votes to rival the others, especially as one of the longest running, where customers claimed to have been going to for years.

Lisa Marie said: “Bryan Street chippy been going there since I was a child...best john bulls around.

AJK on Johnstone Street also received many votes in the comments.

Jim King said: “AJK Johnstone Street is second to none in Blackburn, also the Queens cannot be beaten by any chip shop for price size and quality, the ocean chippy on King Street is another who serves up nice chips and massive fish.

“All these guys are under a fiver or better and the fish from all three will be 3 times the size of any other chippy you can find at that price.”
