A fire which started on an open land has spread to a derelict building - with locals being told to stay inside if they smell smoke.

UPDATE: The fire is now extinguished.

A spokesperson for the police said: "Following our earlier post about the fire on Stone Bridge Lane at Oswaldtwistle we are happy to say that Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service have put out the fire and the road is now re-open.

"Thanks to everyone for their co-operation while the incident was dealt with."

A spokesperson for the fire service said: "Five fire engines and an aerial ladder platform were called to a fire on Stone Bridge Lane, Oswaldtwistle.

"Firefighters used one ground monitor and two jets to extinguish the fire involving a derelict commercial building.

"No injuries were reported but there is a joint police and fire investigation underway."

Crews were called to the blaze, which started on an open area on Stone Bridge Lane in Oswaldtwistle just after 2.10pm this afternoon.

Five engines from Hyndburn, Blackburn and Darwen are currently on the scene tackling the fire with jets and breathing apparatus.

A spokesperson for the fire service said: "We have five fire engines dealing with an incident on Stone Bridge Lane, Oswaldtwistle.

"Our crews were called at 14:09 to a fire in the open which has spread to a building.

"If you are in the area and can smell the smoke, please stay indoors and close your windows and doors."

Police are also on the scene and have closed the road, asking motorists to avoid the area.

A spokesperson said: "There is currently a road closure in place on Stone Bridge Lane, Oswaldtwistle, to enable our colleagues from Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service to deal with a fire.

"We ask that people please avoid the area if possible. We will update you when we can."
