THERE are slides and then there are giant slides.

These photographs from the archives show two of the monster slides which were built for youngsters in Blackburn and Darwen.

Most people will be familiar with the traditional playground slide - you climbed up a ladder and came straight down a relatively short slide.

These monsters were a completely different beast and were actually built into the slope of the hillside.

Another unusual feature of the super slides was the fact that they had bends in them creating a ‘slalom’ effect.

Kids loved them but a number of parents - and some officials - were less convinced by them and there were reports of numerous accidents. It was these accidents which eventually led to the slides being removed.
