FATHER’S DAY IN THE UK is fast approaching- but when exactly is it and why do we celebrate it in the first place?

It’s a day to celebrate the father figures in our lives, including our biological fathers, step fathers, carers and grandparents.

Here’s everything you need to know about the day- including how long you have to get your Father’s Day presents ordered:

How did Father’s Day start?

Mother’s Day is a much older traditional and has been celebrated for hundreds of years.

However, Father’s Day is a much more recent addition to the calendar.

It’s widely accepted that the first Father’s Day took place in America on 5 July 1908.

This is after Grace Clayton in West Virginia mourned the loss of her father after he died in a mining accident; she suggested that her pastor honour all the fathers that died in the accident.

Another early instance of Father’s Day celebration took place on June 19 in 1910 in Spokane, Washington.

Senora Dodd was inspired to hold a Father’s Day after attending a Mother’s Day service the previous year.

How is it celebrated around the world?

In the UK, we traditionally celebrate by making an effort to visit our fathers, typically showering them with gifts and cards.

However, countries across the world celebrate differently.

In Thailand, the day is celebrated on 5 December which is also the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s birthday- a man they consider to be the father of the nation.

It is traditional to wear yellow and fathers and grandfathers also used to be given a Canna flower.

In South America, Brazil celebrates Father’s Day on the second Sunday of August, which is in honour of Saint Joachim, who is the patron saint of fathers.

Over in Mexico they call Father’s Day  Día del Padre- and they also celebrate it on the third Sunday in June.

Every year in Mexico City, people take part in a 13 mile Father’s Day race; children can also take part alongside their parental figures.

In Germany, children and their fathers often go on hiking trips.

In Nepal, children give their fathers sweets and kids sometimes receive blessings from their fathers.

If their fathers have passed away, they will head to a pilgrimage site and perform a holy ritual of remembrance called shradda.

It’s traditional to give red roses to your father in France- but if he has died, white roses are laid on their grave.

When is Father’s Day 2021

In the UK, Father’s day will be taking place on Sunday June 20- as it always lands on the third Sunday of June.

This is the same date as the US.
