THREE EAST Lancashire boroughs are amongst the top five areas with the highest weekly rise in coronavirus cases in England.

According to Public Health England, Blackburn with Darwen recorded the highest rise in cases going up from 159.7 cases per 100,000 to 333.3, with 499 new cases in the seven days leading to May 23.

Meanwhile, Rossendale recorded the second highest rise, going from 35.0 cases per 100,000 people to 166.5, while Hyndburn recorded the fifth, going from 45.7 to 91.3 in the same period.

This leaves Blackburn with Darwen with the second highest case rate in England overall just behind Bolton.

Rossendale had the fourth highest rate overall, with Hyndburn the sixth and Burnley the seventh.

Of East Lancashire's boroughs, only Pendle and the Ribble Valley were found to be outside the top ten of areas with the highest case rates.

This comes after Blackburn with Darwen and Burnley were plunged into confusion earlier this week with government advice appearing to change for areas hit hard by the Indian variant of coronavirus, only for public health officials to then confirm that there were no new local lockdowns.
