BLACKBURN with Darwen has recorded the highest week-on-week rise in coronavirus rates.

According to figures collected by Public Health England, the borough has gone from 145 cases per 100,000 people to 313.3, with 469 new cases in the seven days to May 22.

During the same period Rossendale recorded the third highest rise in cases, going from 29.4 per 100,000 people to 137.1.

This leaves the Blackburn with Darwen with the second highest case rate in England overall, while Burnley, Rossendale and Hyndburn are also in the top ten boroughs with the highest case rates.

These figures come after a week in which apparent changes to government guidance for areas hit by the Indian variant of the virus caused widespread confusion,

Public health directors have now confirmed that there will be no new local lockdowns.
